א חָדְשָׁה שֶׁל לְבָנָה תִּשְׁעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים יוֹם וּמֶחֱצָה וְתשצ"ג חֲלָקִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ. וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר לוֹמַר שֶׁרֹאשׁ הַחֹדֶשׁ יִהְיֶה בְּמִקְצָת הַיּוֹם עַד שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מִקְצָת הַיּוֹם מֵחֹדֶשׁ שֶׁעָבַר וּמִקְצָתוֹ מֵהַבָּא. שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר יא כ) "עַד חֹדֶשׁ יָמִים" מִפִּי הַשְּׁמוּעָה לָמְדוּ שֶׁיָּמִים אַתָּה מְחַשֵּׁב לְחֹדֶשׁ וְאִי אַתָּה מְחַשֵּׁב שָׁעוֹת:

ב לְפִיכָךְ עוֹשִׂין חָדְשֵׁי הַלְּבָנָה מֵהֶן חֹדֶשׁ חָסֵר וּמֵהֶם חֹדֶשׁ מָלֵא. חֹדֶשׁ חָסֵר תִּשְׁעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים יוֹם בִּלְבַד וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁחָדְשָׁהּ שֶׁל לְבָנָה יֶתֶר עַל זֶה בְּשָׁעוֹת. וְחֹדֶשׁ מָלֵא מִשְּׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁחָדְשָׁהּ שֶׁל לְבָנָה פָּחוֹת מִזֶּה בְּשָׁעוֹת. כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא לְחַשֵּׁב שָׁעוֹת בַּחֹדֶשׁ אֶלָּא יָמִים שְׁלֵמִים:

ג אִלּוּ הָיָה חָדְשָׁהּ שֶׁל לְבָנָה תִּשְׁעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים יוֹם וּמֶחֱצָה בִּלְבַד הָיוּ כָּל הַשָּׁנִים חֹדֶשׁ מָלֵא וְחֹדֶשׁ חָסֵר. וְיִהְיוּ יְמֵי שְׁנַת הַלְּבָנָה שנ"ד, שִׁשָּׁה חֳדָשִׁים חֲסֵרִים וְשִׁשָּׁה חֳדָשִׁים מְלֵאִים. אֲבָל מִפְּנֵי הַחֲלָקִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ בְּכָל חֹדֶשׁ וְחֹדֶשׁ יוֹתֵר עַל חֲצִי הַיּוֹם יִתְקַבֵּץ מֵהֶן שָׁעוֹת וְיָמִים. עַד שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מִקְצָת הַשָּׁנִים חֳדָשִׁים חֲסֵרִים יוֹתֵר עַל הַמְּלֵאִים וּבְמִקְצָת הַשָּׁנִים חֳדָשִׁים מְלֵאִים יוֹתֵר עַל הַחֲסֵרִים:

3 If the lunar month was only twenty-nine and a half days, all of the years would [always alternate to] be a full month and a lacking month. And the days of the lunar year would be three hundred and fifty-four: Six lacking months and six full months. But because of the parts beyond the half a day that there is in each and every month, some of their hours and days aggregate. [This happens] until some of the years have more lacking [months] than complete, and some of them have more complete than lacking.

ד יוֹם שְׁלֹשִׁים לְעוֹלָם עוֹשִׂין אוֹתוֹ רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה. אִם הָיָה הַחֹדֶשׁ שֶׁעָבַר חָסֵר יִהְיֶה יוֹם שְׁלֹשִׁים רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ הַבָּא. וְאִם יִהְיֶה הַחֹדֶשׁ שֶׁעָבַר מָלֵא יִהְיֶה יוֹם שְׁלֹשִׁים רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ הוֹאִיל וּמִקְצָתוֹ רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ. וְיִהְיֶה תַּשְׁלוּם הַחֹדֶשׁ הַמָּלֵא שֶׁעָבַר. וְיִהְיֶה יוֹם אֶחָד וּשְׁלֹשִׁים רֹאשׁ הַחֹדֶשׁ הַבָּא וּמִמֶּנּוּ הוּא הַמִּנְיָן. וְהוּא יוֹם הַקְּבִיעָה. וּלְפִיכָךְ עוֹשִׂין רָאשֵׁי חֳדָשִׁים בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה חֹדֶשׁ אֶחָד יוֹם אֶחָד בִּלְבַד וְחֹדֶשׁ אֶחָד שְׁנֵי יָמִים:

4 According to this calculation, we always make the thirtieth day, Rosh Chodesh. If the month that passed is lacking, the thirtieth day will be Rosh Chodesh for the coming month. And if the month that passed is full, the thirtieth day [will still] be Rosh Chodesh, since part of it is Rosh Chodesh. And the rest [of it] will be the completion of the full month that passed; and the thirty-first day will be Rosh Chodesh of the coming [month]. And the counting will [start] from it; and that is the day of setting. And hence according to this calculation, one month we only make one day [of Rosh Chodesh] and one month two days.

ה סֵדֶר הֶחֳדָשִׁים הַמְּלֵאִים וְהַחֲסֵרִים לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה כָּךְ הוּא. תִּשְׁרֵי לְעוֹלָם מָלֵא. וְטֵבֵת לְעוֹלָם חָסֵר. וּמִטֵּבֵת וְאֵילָךְ אֶחָד מָלֵא וְאֶחָד חָסֵר עַל הַסֵּדֶר. כֵּיצַד. טֵבֵת חָסֵר שְׁבָט מָלֵא. אֲדָר חָסֵר נִיסָן מָלֵא. אִיָּר חָסֵר סִיוָן מָלֵא. תַּמּוּז חָסֵר אָב מָלֵא. אֱלוּל חָסֵר. וּבְשָׁנָה הַמְעֻבֶּרֶת אֲדָר רִאשׁוֹן מָלֵא וַאֲדָר שֵׁנִי חָסֵר:

5 The order of the full and lacking months according to this calculation is like this: Tishrei is always full; and Tevet is always lacking; and from Tevet onward, [it is] one full and one lacking, in order. How is this? Tevet is lacking, Shevat is full, Adar is lacking, Nissan is full, Iyar is lacking, Sivan is full, Tammuz is lacking, Av is full, Elul is lacking. And in a leap year, First Adar is full and Second Adar is lacking.

ו נִשְׁאֲרוּ שְׁנֵי הֶחֳדָשִׁים שֶׁהֵן מַרְחֶשְׁוָן וְכִסְלֵו. פְּעָמִים יִהְיוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם מְלֵאִים וּפְעָמִים יִהְיוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם חֲסֵרִים וּפְעָמִים יִהְיֶה מַרְחֶשְׁוָן חָסֵר וְכִסְלֵו מָלֵא. וְשָׁנָה שֶׁיִּהְיוּ בָּהּ שְׁנֵי חֳדָשִׁים אֵלּוּ מְלֵאִים הִיא שֶׁנִּקְרְאוּ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ שְׁלֵמִים. וְשָׁנָה שֶׁיִּהְיוּ בָּהּ שְׁנֵי חֳדָשִׁים אֵלּוּ חֲסֵרִים נִקְרְאוּ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ חֲסֵרִין. וְשָׁנָה שֶׁיִּהְיוּ בָּהּ מַרְחֶשְׁוָן חָסֵר וְכִסְלֵו מָלֵא נִקְרְאוּ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ כְּסִדְרָן:

6 There remain two months – which are Marchesvan and Kislev. Sometimes both of them will be full, sometimes both of them will be lacking and sometimes Marchesvan will be lacking and Kislev will be full. A year in which both of these months are full is one in which its months are called complete. And a year in which both of these months are lacking is one in which its months are called lacking. And a year in which Marchesvan is lacking and Kislev is full [is one in which] it months are called in order.

ז דֶּרֶךְ יְדִיעַת הַשָּׁנָה אִם חֳדָשֶׁיהָ מְלֵאִים אוֹ חֲסֵרִין אוֹ כְּסִדְרָן לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה כָּךְ הוּא. תֵּדַע תְּחִלָּה יוֹם שֶׁנִּקְבַּע בּוֹ רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁתִּרְצֶה לֵידַע סִדּוּר חֳדָשֶׁיהָ כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ בְּפֶרֶק שְׁבִיעִי. וְתֵדַע יוֹם שֶׁיִּקָּבַע בּוֹ רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ. וּתְחַשֵּׁב מִנְיַן הַיָּמִים שֶׁבֵּינֵיהֶן חוּץ מִיּוֹם הַקְּבִיעָה שֶׁל זוֹ וְשֶׁל זוֹ. אִם תִּמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶן שְׁנֵי יָמִים יִהְיוּ חָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה חֲסֵרִין. וְאִם תִּמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשָׁה יָמִים יִהְיוּ כְּסִדְרָן. וְאִם תִּמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעָה יָמִים יִהְיוּ חָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה שְׁלֵמִים:

7 The way of knowing whether the months of a year are complete, lacking or in order for this calculation is like this: First know the day in which Rosh Hashanah was set [for the year] the order of the months of which you want to know – as we explained in Chapter 7. And know the day that Rosh Hashanah was set in [the year] that is after it. And [then] calculate the number of days between them, besides the day of the setting of this one and of that one. If you find two days between them, the months of that year will be lacking. And if you find three days between them, they will be in order. And if you find four days between them, they will be complete.

ח בַּמֶּה דְּבָרִים אֲמוּרִים כְּשֶׁהָיְתָה הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁתִּרְצֶה לֵידַע סִדּוּר חֳדָשֶׁיהָ פְּשׁוּטָה. אֲבָל אִם הָיְתָה מְעֵבֶּרֶת. אִם תִּמְצָא בֵּין יוֹם קְבִיעָתָהּ וּבֵין יוֹם קְבִיעַת שָׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ אַרְבָּעָה יָמִים יִהְיוּ חָדְשֵׁי אוֹתָהּ שָׁנָה הַמְעֻבֶּרֶת חֲסֵרִים. וְאִם תִּמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶם חֲמִשָּׁה יָמִים יִהְיוּ כְּסִדְרָן. וְאִם תִּמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶם שִׁשָּׁה יִהְיוּ שְׁלֵמִים:

8 To what are these words applicable? When the year that you want to know the order of its months was simple. But if it was a leap year: If you find four days between the day of its setting and the day of the setting of the year after it, the months of that leap year will be lacking. And if you find five days between them, they will be in order. And if you find six, they will be complete.

ט כֵּיצַד. הֲרֵי שֶׁרָצִינוּ לֵידַע סִדּוּר חָדְשֵׁי שָׁנָה זוֹ. וְהָיָה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בַּחֲמִישִׁי וְהִיא פְּשׁוּטָה וְרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ בְּשֵׁנִי בְּשַׁבָּת. נִמְצָא בֵּינֵיהֶן שְׁלֹשָׁה יָמִים. יָדַעְנוּ שֶׁשָּׁנָה זוֹ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ כְּסִדְרָן. וְאִלּוּ הָיָה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ בִּשְׁלִישִׁי הָיוּ חָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה זוֹ שְׁלֵמִים. וְאִלּוּ הָיָה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה זוֹ בְּשַׁבָּת וּבַשָּׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ בִּשְׁלִישִׁי בְּשַׁבָּת הָיוּ חָדְשֵׁי שָׁנָה זוֹ חֲסֵרִין. וְעַל דֶּרֶךְ זוֹ תְּחַשֵּׁב לַשָּׁנָה הַמְעֻבֶּרֶת כְּמוֹ שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ:

9 How is this? See that [if] we wanted to know the order of the months of this year; and Rosh Hashanah was on the Fifth and [the year] was simple and Rosh Hashanah that was after is on the Second from Shabbat: [If] it comes out that there are three days between them, we will have known that the months of this year are in order. And if Rosh Hashanah that was after it is on the Third, the months of the year were surely complete. And if Rosh Hashanah of this year is on Shabbat, and it is on the Third from Shabbat in the year that was after it – the months of this year were lacking. And in this way do you calculate for the leap year [as well], as we have explained.

י יֵשׁ שָׁם סִימָנִין שֶׁתִּסְמֹךְ עֲלֵיהֶם כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא תִּטְעֶה בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן סִדּוּר חָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה וְהֵן בְּנוּיִין עַל עִקְּרֵי זֶה הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן וְהַקְּבִיעוֹת וְהַדְּחִיּוֹת שֶׁבֵּאַרְנוּ דַּרְכָּם. וְאֵלּוּ הֵן. כָּל שָׁנָה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בָּהּ בַּשְּׁלִישִׁי תִּהְיֶה לְעוֹלָם כְּסִדְרָן לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה. בֵּין פְּשׁוּטָה בֵּין מְעֻבֶּרֶת. וְאִם יִהְיֶה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בְּשַׁבָּת אוֹ בְּשֵׁנִי לֹא תִּהְיֶה כְּסִדְרָן לְעוֹלָם בֵּין בִּפְשׁוּטָה בֵּין בִּמְעֵבֶּרֶת. וְאִם יִהְיֶה רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בַּחֲמִישִׁי. אִם פְּשׁוּטָה הִיא אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיִּהְיוּ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ חֲסֵרִים לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה. וְאִם מְעֻבֶּרֶת הִיא אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיִּהְיוּ חֳדָשֶׁיהָ כְּסִדְרָן לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה:

10 There are indicators that you may rely upon in order not to err in the calculation of the order of the months of the year – and they are built upon the general principles of this calculation and the settings and delays that we explained through them. And these are them: Any year in which Rosh Hashanah is the Third (Day of the week, meaning Tuesday), it will always be in order, according to this calculation – whether it is a simple or a leap year. And if Rosh Hashanah will be on Shabbat or on the Second, it will never be in order – whether it is a simple or a leap year. But if Rosh Hashanah will be on the Fifth: If it is simple, it is impossible that its months will be lacking, according to this calculation. And it if is a leap year, it is impossible that its months will be in order, according to this calculation.
