א בִזְמַן שֶׁעוֹשִׂין עַל הָרְאִיָּה הָיוּ מְחַשְּׁבִין וְיוֹדְעִין שָׁעָה שֶׁיִּתְקַבֵּץ בּוֹ הַיָּרֵחַ עִם הַחַמָּה בְּדִקְדּוּק הַרְבֵּה כְּדֶרֶךְ שֶׁהָאִיצְטַגְנִינִין עוֹשִׂין. כְּדֵי לֵידַע אִם יֵרָאֶה הַיָּרֵחַ אוֹ לֹא יֵרָאֶה. וּתְחִלַּת אוֹתוֹ הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן הוּא הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן שֶׁמְּחַשְּׁבִין אוֹתוֹ בְּקֵרוּב וְיוֹדְעִין שְׁעַת קִבּוּצָם בְּלֹא דִּקְדּוּק אֶלָּא בְּמַהֲלָכָם הָאֶמְצָעִי הוּא הַנִּקְרָא מוֹלָד. וְעִקְּרֵי הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן שֶׁמְּחַשְּׁבִין בִּזְמַן שֶׁאֵין שָׁם בֵּית דִּין שֶׁיִּקְבְּעוּ בּוֹ עַל הָרְאִיָּה וְהוּא חֶשְׁבּוֹן שֶׁאָנוּ מְחַשְּׁבִין הַיּוֹם הוּא הַנִּקְרָא עִבּוּר:

1 When the fixing of the new month used to be based upon the observation process, the sages calculated with great precision to ascertain the moment at which the conjunction of the moon with the sun occurred, according to the practice of the astronomers, so as to know whether the moon could appear on the night of the thirtieth day or not. The beginning of this calculation that we calculate by approximation – to know the time of their conjunction without precision, but rather according to their average trajectories – is what is called the molad. But the main principles of the calculation that we calculate at a time when there is not a court to set it according to a sighting – and that is the calculation that we calculate today – are what are called, eebur.

ח וְכֵן כְּשֶׁיִּהְיֶה עִמְּךָ יָדוּעַ מוֹלַד שָׁנָה זוֹ וְתוֹסִיף שְׁאֵרִיתָהּ עַל יְמֵי הַמּוֹלָד. אִם פְּשׁוּטָה הִיא שְׁאֵרִית הַפְּשׁוּטָה וְאִם מְעֻבֶּרֶת הִיא שְׁאֵרִית הַמְעֻבֶּרֶת. יֵצֵא לְךָ מוֹלַד שָׁנָה שֶׁלְּאַחֲרֶיהָ. וְכֵן שָׁנָה אַחַר שָׁנָה עַד סוֹף הָעוֹלָם. וְהַמּוֹלָד הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁמִּמֶּנּוּ תַּתְחִיל הוּא מוֹלַד שֶׁהָיָה בַּשָּׁנָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה שֶׁל יְצִירָה. וְהוּא הָיָה בְּלֵיל שֵׁנִי חָמֵשׁ שָׁעוֹת בַּלַּיְלָה וּמָאתַיִם וְאַרְבָּעָה חֲלָקִים. סִימָן לָהֶם בהר"ד וּמִמֶּנּוּ הוּא תְּחִלַּת הַחֶשְׁבּוֹן:

8 And likewise if the molad (beginning) of this year is known to you, and you add its remainder to the days of the molad – if it is a simple [year], the remainder of a simple year; if it is a leap year, the remainder of a leap year – [it] comes out to the molad of the year after it. And likewise year after year until the end of the world. And the first molad from which you should begin is the molad that was in the first year of creation. And it was on the second night, five hours and two hundred and forty parts into the night. Its symbol is 2.5.204; and the beginning of the calculation is from it.

ט בְּכָל הַחֶשְׁבּוֹנוֹת הָאֵלּוּ שֶׁתֵּדַע מֵהֶן הַמּוֹלָד. כְּשֶׁתּוֹסִיף שְׁאֵרִית עִם שְׁאֵרִית. כְּשֶׁיִּתְקַבֵּץ מִן הַחֲלָקִים אֶלֶף וּשְׁמוֹנִים תַּשְׁלִים שָׁעָה אַחַת וְתוֹסִיף אוֹתָהּ לְמִנְיַן הַשָּׁעוֹת. וּכְשֶׁיִּתְקַבֵּץ מִן הַשָּׁעוֹת אַרְבַּע וְעֶשְׂרִים תַּשְׁלִים יוֹם וְתוֹסִיף מִמֶּנּוּ לְמִנְיַן הַיָּמִים. וּכְשֶׁיִּתְקַבֵּץ מִן הַיָּמִים יוֹתֵר עַל שִׁבְעָה תַּשְׁלִיךְ שִׁבְעָה מִן הַמִּנְיָן וְתַנִּיחַ הַשְּׁאָר. שֶׁאֵין אָנוּ מְחַשְּׁבִין לֵידַע מִנְיַן הַיָּמִים אֶלָּא לֵידַע בְּאֵי זֶה יוֹם מִימֵי הַשָּׁבוּעַ וּבְאֵי זֶה שָׁעָה וְאֵי זֶה חֵלֶק יִהְיֶה הַמּוֹלָד:

9 In all of these calculations from which you can know the molad, when you add a remainder with a remainder: When there is a sum of a thousand and eighty parts, you complete an hour and you add it to the number of hours. [And] when there is a sum of twenty-four hours, you complete a day and you add it to the number of days. But when there is a sum of more than seven days, you remove seven from the number – for we are not calculating to know the number of days, but rather to know which day of the days of the week and at which hour and which part the molad will be.

י כָּל תְּשַׁע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מֵהֶן שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים מְעֵבָּרוֹת וּשְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה פְּשׁוּטוֹת נִקְרָא מַחֲזוֹר. וְלָמָּה סָמַכְנוּ עַל מִנְיָן זֶה. שֶׁבִּזְמַן שֶׁאַתָּה מְקַבֵּץ מִנְיַן יְמֵי שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה פְּשׁוּטוֹת וְשֶׁבַע מְעֵבָּרוֹת וּשְׁעוֹתֵיהֶן וְחֶלְקֵיהֶן וְתַשְׁלִים כָּל אֶלֶף וּשְׁמֹנִים חֲלָקִים שָׁעָה. וְכָל אַרְבַּע וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁעוֹת יוֹם. וְתוֹסִיף לְמִנְיַן הַיָּמִים. תִּמְצָא הַכּל תְּשַׁע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה מִשְּׁנֵי הַחַמָּה שֶׁכָּל שָׁנָה מֵהֶן שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְשִׁשִּׁים יוֹם וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁעוֹת בְּשָׁוֶה. וְלֹא יִשָּׁאֵר מִמִּנְיַן יְמֵי הַחַמָּה בְּכָל תְּשַׁע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה חוּץ מִשָּׁעָה אַחַת וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת וּשְׁמוֹנִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה חֲלָקִים. סִימָן לָהֶם אתפ"ה:

10 Each group of nineteen years, consisting of seven leap years and twelve ordinary years, is called maḥzor (cycle). And why did we rely on this number? Since when you make a sum of the number of days, their hours and their parts in the twelve simple years and the seven leap years, – and you complete every one thousand eighty parts into an hour and every twenty-four hours into a day and add it to the number of days – you will find that all of it is nineteen solar years, of which each one is exactly three hundred and sixty-five days and six hours. And there is no remainder from [this] number of solar years except for one hour and four hundred and eighty-five parts. Its symbol is 1.485.

יא נִמְצָא בְּמַחֲזוֹר שֶׁהוּא כָּזֶה הֶחֳדָשִׁים כֻּלָּם חָדְשֵׁי הַלְּבָנָה וְהַשָּׁנִים שְׁנֵי הַחַמָּה. וְהַשֶּׁבַע שָׁנִים הַמְעֻבָּרוֹת שֶׁבְּכָל מַחֲזוֹר וּמַחֲזוֹר לְפִי חֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה הֵם שָׁנָה שְׁלִישִׁית מִן הַמַּחֲזוֹר וְשִׁשִּׁית וּשְׁמִינִית וּשְׁנַת אַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה וּשְׁנַת אַרְבַּע עֶשְׂרֵה וּשְׁנַת שְׁבַע עֶשְׂרֵה וּשְׁנַת י"ט. סִימָן לָהֶם גו"ח י"א י"ד י"ז י"ט:

11 It comes out that in a cycle that is like this, all of the months are lunar months and the years are solar years. And the seven leap years in each and every cycle – according to this calculation – are the third year of the cycle, the sixth year, the eighth year, the eleventh year, the fourteenth year, the seventeenth year and nineteenth year. Their symbol is 3.6.8.11.14.17.19.

יב כְּשֶׁתְּקַבֵּץ שְׁאֵרִית כָּל שָׁנָה מִשְּׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה הַפְּשׁוּטוֹת שֶׁהִיא ד"ח תתע"ו. וּשְׁאֵרִית כָּל שָׁנָה מִשֶּׁבַע שָׁנִים הַמְעֻבָּרוֹת שֶׁהִיא הכ"א תקפ"ט. וְתַשְׁלִיךְ הַכּל שִׁבְעָה שִׁבְעָה יִשָּׁאֵר שְׁנֵי יָמִים וְשֵׁשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁעוֹת וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְתִשְׁעִים חֲלָקִים. סִימָן לָהֶם בי"ו תקצ"ה. וְזֶה הוּא שְׁאֵרִית הַמַּחֲזוֹר:

12 When you make a sum of the remainders of all of the twelve simple years, [each one of] which being 4.8.876; and the remainder of the seven leap years, [each one of] which being 5.21.589; and you remove all of it seven by seven – the remainder will be two days, sixteen hours and five hundred ninety-five parts. Its symbol is 2.16.595.

יג כְּשֶׁיִּהְיֶה לְךָ יָדוּעַ מוֹלַד תְּחִלַּת מַחֲזוֹר וְתוֹסִיף עָלָיו בי"ו תקצ"ה. יָצָא לְךָ תְּחִלַּת הַמַּחֲזוֹר שֶׁאַחֲרָיו וְכֵן מוֹלַד כָּל מַחֲזוֹר וּמַחֲזוֹר עַד סוֹף הָעוֹלָם. וּכְבָר אָמַרְנוּ שֶׁמּוֹלַד תְּחִלַּת הַמַּחֲזוֹר הָרִאשׁוֹן הָיָה לבהר"ד. וּמוֹלַד הַשָּׁנָה הוּא מוֹלַד תִּשְׁרֵי שֶׁל אוֹתָהּ הַשָּׁנָה:

13 When the molad of the beginning of the cycle is known to you, and you add 2.16.595, [it] comes out for you to the beginning of the cycle after it. And likewise the molad of each and every cycle until the end of the world. And we have already said that the molad at the beginning of the first cycle was 2.5.240. And the molad of the year is the molad of Tishrei of that year.

יד וּבַדֶּרֶךְ הַזֹּאת תֵּדַע מוֹלַד כָּל שָׁנָה וְשָׁנָה שֶׁתִּרְצֶה. וּמוֹלַד כָּל חֹדֶשׁ וְחֹדֶשׁ שֶׁתִּרְצֶה. מִשָּׁנִים שֶׁעָבְרוּ אוֹ מִשָּׁנִים שֶׁעֲתִידִים לָבֹא. כֵּיצַד. תִּקַּח שְׁנֵי יְצִירָה שֶׁעָבְרוּ וְגָמְרוּ וְתַעֲשֶׂה אוֹתָם מַחֲזוֹרִין שֶׁל תְּשַׁע עֶשְׂרֵה תְּשַׁע עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה עַד תִּשְׁרֵי שֶׁל אוֹתָהּ הַשָּׁנָה. וְתֵדַע מִנְיַן הַמַּחֲזוֹרִין שֶׁעָבְרוּ וּמִנְיַן הַשָּׁנִים שֶׁעָבְרוּ מִמַּחֲזוֹר שֶׁעֲדַיִן לֹא נִשְׁלַם. וְתִקַּח לְכָל מַחֲזוֹר וּמַחֲזוֹר בי"ו תקצ"ה. וּלְכָל שָׁנָה וְשָׁנָה פְּשׁוּטָה מִשְּׁנֵי הַמַּחֲזוֹר שֶׁלֹּא נִשְׁלַם ד"ח תתע"ו. וּלְכָל שָׁנָה מְעֵבֶּרֶת הכ"א תקפ"ט. וּתְקַבֵּץ הַכּל וְתַשְׁלִים הַחֲלָקִים שָׁעוֹת. וְתַשְׁלִים הַשָּׁעוֹת יָמִים. וְהַיָּמִים תַּשְׁלִיכֵם שִׁבְעָה שִׁבְעָה. וְהַנִּשְׁאָר מִן הַיָּמִים וּמִן הַשָּׁעוֹת וְהַחֲלָקִים הוּא מוֹלַד שָׁנָה הַבָּאָה שֶׁתִּרְצֶה לֵידַע מוֹלָדָהּ:

14 And in this way, you will know the molad of each and every year that you want, and the molad of each and every month that you want – from years that have passed or years that will come in the future. How is this? Take the years of creation that have passed and finished until Tishrei of that year and make them (divide them by) cycles of nineteen each – and you will know the number of cycles that have passed and the number of years that have passed from the cycle which has not yet concluded. And take 2.16.595 for each and every [completed] cycle, and 4.8.876 for each and every single year of the years of the cycle that has not concluded, and 5.21.589 for each [of its] leap years. Take the sum of everything, complete the parts to hours, complete the hours to days and remove the days seven by seven – and the remainder of the days and of the hours and of the parts is the molad of the next year, the molad of which you want to know.

טו מוֹלַד הַשָּׁנָה שֶׁיֵּצֵא בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן זֶה הוּא מוֹלַד רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ תִּשְׁרֵי. וּכְשֶׁתּוֹסִיף עָלָיו אי"ב תשצ"ג יֵצֵא מוֹלַד מַרְחֶשְׁוָן. וּכְשֶׁתּוֹסִיף עַל מַרְחֶשְׁוָן אי"ב תשצ"ג יֵצֵא מוֹלַד כִּסְלֵו. וְכֵן לְכָל חֹדֶשׁ וְחֹדֶשׁ זֶה אַחַר זֶה עַד סוֹף הָעוֹלָם:

15 The molad of the year that comes out in this calculation is the molad of the head of the month of Tishrei. And when you add 1.12.793, [it] comes out to the molad of MarCheshvan. And when you add 1.12.793 to MarCheshvan, [it] comes out to the molad of Kislev. And likewise for each and every month – one after [the other] – until the end of the world.
