Chapter 5

א הַדְלָ[קַ]ת נֵר בְּשַׁבָּת אֵינָהּ רְשׁוּת אִם רָצָה מַדְלִיק וְאִם רָצָה אֵינוֹ מַדְלִיק. וְלֹא מִצְוָה שֶׁאֵינוֹ חַיָּב לִרְדֹּף אַחֲרֶיהָ עַד שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂנָה כְּגוֹן עֵרוּבֵי חֲצֵרוֹת אוֹ נְטִילַת יָדַיִם לַאֲכִילָה אֶלָּא זֶה חוֹבָה. וְאֶחָד אֲנָשִׁים וְאֶחָד נָשִׁים חַיָּבִין לִהְיוֹת בְּבָתֵּיהֶן נֵר דָּלוּק בְּשַׁבָּת. אֲפִלּוּ אֵין לוֹ מַה יֹּאכַל שׁוֹאֵל עַל הַפְּתָחִים וְלוֹקֵחַ שֶׁמֶן וּמַדְלִיק אֶת הַנֵּר שֶׁזֶּה בִּכְלַל עֹנֶג שַׁבָּת. וְחַיָּב לְבָרֵךְ קֹדֶם הַדְלָקָה בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת. כְּדֶרֶךְ שֶׁמְּבָרֵךְ עַל כָּל הַדְּבָרִים שֶׁהוּא חַיָּב בָּהֶם מִדִּבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים:

ב מֻתָּר לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּנֵר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת. וְהוּא שֶׁלֹּא יְהֵא הַדָּבָר צָרִיךְ עִיּוּן הַרְבֵּה. אֲבָל דָּבָר שֶׁצָּרִיךְ לְדַקְדֵּק בִּרְאִיָּתוֹ אָסוּר לְהַבְחִינוֹ לְאוֹר הַנֵּר גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יַטֶּה:

ג הַמַּדְלִיק צָרִיךְ לְהַדְלִיק מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם קֹדֶם שְׁקִיעַת הַחַמָּה. וְנָשִׁים מְצֻוּוֹת עַל דָּבָר זֶה יוֹתֵר מִן הָאֲנָשִׁים לְפִי שֶׁהֵן מְצוּיוֹת בַּבָּתִּים וְהֵן הָעֲסוּקוֹת בִּמְלֶאכֶת הַבַּיִת. וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן צָרִיךְ הָאִישׁ לְהַזְהִירָן וְלִבְדֹּק אוֹתָן עַל כָּךְ וְלוֹמַר לָהֶן וּלְאַנְשֵׁי בֵּיתוֹ עֶרֶב שַׁבָּת קֹדֶם שֶׁתֶּחְשַׁךְ הַדְלִיקוּ אֶת הַנֵּר. סְפֵק חֲשֵׁכָה וְנִכְנַס הַשַּׁבָּת סָפֵק לֹא נִכְנַס אֵין מַדְלִיקִין:

ד מִשֶּׁתִּשְׁקַע הַחַמָּה עַד שֶׁיֵּרָאוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה כּוֹכָבִים בֵּינוֹנִים הוּא הַזְּמַן הַנִּקְרָא בֵּין הַשְּׁמָשׁוֹת בְּכָל מָקוֹם. וְהוּא סָפֵק מִן הַיּוֹם סָפֵק מִן הַלַּיְלָה וְדָנִין בּוֹ לְהַחֲמִיר בְּכָל מָקוֹם. וּלְפִיכָךְ אֵין מַדְלִיקִין בּוֹ. וְהָעוֹשֶׂה מְלָאכָה בֵּין הַשְּׁמָשׁוֹת בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת וּבְמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת בְּשׁוֹגֵג חַיָּב חַטָּאת מִכָּל מָקוֹם. וְכוֹכָבִים אֵלּוּ לֹא גְּדוֹלִים הַנִּרְאִים בַּיּוֹם וְלֹא קְטַנִּים שֶׁאֵין נִרְאִין אֶלָּא בַּלַּיְלָה אֶלָּא בֵּינוֹנִים. וּמִשֶׁיֵּרָאוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה כּוֹכָבִים אֵלּוּ הַבֵּינוֹנִים הֲרֵי זֶה לַיְלָה וַדַּאי:

4 The period from sunset until the time when three stars of medium size become visible is called twilight. It is uncertain whether this period is part of the preceding day or of the following night. We generally decide in favor of greater stringency on this score; hence, the Sabbath lights may not be lit during twilight. And one who inadvertently does forbidden work at twilight on the eve of Shabbat and at the conclusion of Shabbat is nevertheless liable for a sin-offering. And these stars are not the large ones that are visible during the day and not the small ones that are only visible at night, but rather the medium ones. And from when three of these medium stars become visible, it is surely night with no doubt.

ה פְּתִילָה שֶׁמַּדְלִיקִין בָּהּ לְשַׁבָּת אֵין עוֹשִׂין אוֹתָהּ מִדָּבָר שֶׁהָאוּר מְסַכְסֶכֶת בּוֹ כְּגוֹן צֶמֶר וְשֵׂעָר וּמֶשִׁי וְצֶמֶר הָאֶרֶז וּפִשְׁתָּן שֶׁלֹּא נֻפַּץ וְסִיב שֶׁל דֶּקֶל וּמִינֵי הָעֵץ הָרַכִּים וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּהֶן. אֶלָּא מִדָּבָר שֶׁהָאוּר נִתְלֵית בּוֹ. כְּגוֹן פִּשְׁתָּה נְפוּצָה וּבִגְדֵי שֵׁשׁ וְצֶמֶר גֶּפֶן וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּהֶן. וְהַמַּדְלִיק צָרִיךְ שֶׁיַּדְלִיק בְּרֹב הַיּוֹצֵא מִן הַפְּתִילָה:

5 We do not make the wick that we light on Shabbat from something upon which the fire flickers, such as wool, hair, silk, cypress-wool, uncombed flax, the webbing of a palm tree, types of soft wood or that which is similar to them. Rather [we make it] from something upon which the fire catches, such as combed flax, silk clothes, cotton and that which is similar to them. One who lights needs to light the majority of what comes out of the wick.

ו הַכּוֹרֵךְ דָּבָר שֶׁמַּדְלִיקִין בּוֹ עַל גַּבֵּי דָּבָר שֶׁאֵין מַדְלִיקִין בּוֹ. אִם לְהַעֲבוֹת הַפְּתִילָה כְּדֵי לְהוֹסִיף אוֹרָהּ אָסוּר. וְאִם לְהַקְשׁוֹת הַפְּתִילָה כְּדֵי שֶׁתְּהֵא עוֹמֶדֶת וְלֹא תִּשְׁתַּלְשֵׁל לְמַטָּה מֻתָּר:

6 One who wraps something with which we light, over something with which we do not light: If it is to thicken the wick in order to add to its light, it is forbidden. But if it is to harden the wick so that it stand and not slip down, it is permissible.

ז נוֹתְנִין גַּרְגִּיר שֶׁל מֶלַח וּגְרִיס שֶׁל פּוֹל עַל פִּי הַנֵּר בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת שֶׁיִּהְיֶה דּוֹלֵק בְּלֵיל שַׁבָּת. וְכָל הַפְּתִילוֹת שֶׁאֵין מַדְלִיקִין בָּהֶן בְּשַׁבָּת עוֹשִׂין מֵהֶן מְדוּרָה בֵּין לְהִתְחַמֵּם כְּנֶגְדָּהּ בֵּין לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ לְאוֹרָהּ בֵּין עַל גַּבֵּי מְנוֹרָה בֵּין עַל גַּבֵּי קַרְקַע. וְלֹא אָסְרוּ אֶלָּא לַעֲשׂוֹתָן פְּתִילָה לְנֵר בִּלְבַד:

7 We may put a grain of salt or a bean particle on top of the lamp on the eve of Shabbat, so that it kindles [properly] on Shabbat night. And we may make a bonfire from all of the wicks that we do not light with on Shabbat – whether it is to warm up by it or whether it is to use its light; whether it is in a sconce or whether it is on the ground. And they only forbade to make them into a wick for a lamp alone.

ח שֶׁמֶן שֶׁמַּדְלִיקִין בּוֹ לִשַׁבָּת צָרִיךְ שֶׁיְּהֵא נִמְשָׁךְ אַחַר הַפְּתִילָה אֲבָל שְׁמָנִין שֶׁאֵין נִמְשָׁכִין אַחַר הַפְּתִילָה כְּגוֹן זֶפֶת וְשַׁעֲוָה וְשֶׁמֶן קִיק וְאַלְיָה וְחֵלֶב אֵין מַדְלִיקִין בָּהֶן. וּמִפְּנֵי מָה אֵין מַדְלִיקִין בִּפְתִילוֹת שֶׁאֵין הָאוּר נִתְלֵית בָּהֶן וְלֹא בִּשְׁמָנִים שֶׁאֵין נִמְשָׁכִים אַחַר הַפְּתִילָה גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יִהְיֶה אוֹר הַנֵּר אָפֵל וְיַטֶּה אוֹתָהּ בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיִּשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ לְאוֹרָהּ:

8 Oil with which we light on Shabbat must be [easily] drawn by the wick. But we do not light with oils that are not drawn by the wick, such as tar, wax, castor oil, lamb’s tail and tallow. And because of what do we not light with wicks that the fire does not catch, and oils that are not drawn by the wick? [It is] a decree lest the fire of the lamp be dingy and he [then] incline it at the time that he uses its light.

ט חֵלֶב שֶׁהִתִּיכוֹ וְקִרְבֵי דָּגִים שֶׁנִּמּוֹחוּ נוֹתֵן לְתוֹכָן שֶׁמֶן כָּל שֶׁהוּא וּמַדְלִיק. אֲבָל שְׁמָנִין שֶׁאֵין מַדְלִיקִין בָּהֶן אֲפִלּוּ עֵרְבָן בִּשְׁמָנִים שֶׁמַּדְלִיקִין בָּהֶן לֹא יַדְלִיק מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין נִמְשָׁכִין:

9 One may put a minimal amount of oil into molten fat or fish innards that dissolved, and [then] light. But even if he mixed oils with which we do light into oils with which we do not light, he may not light [with them] – since they are not drawn.

י אֵין מַדְלִיקִין בְּעִטְרָן מִפְּנֵי שֶׁרֵיחוֹ רַע שֶׁמָּא יַנִּיחֶנּוּ וְיֵצֵא וְחוֹבָה עָלָיו לֵישֵׁב לְאוֹר הַנֵּר. וְלֹא בָּצֳרִי מִפְּנֵי שֶׁרֵיחוֹ טוֹב שֶׁמָּא יִקַּח מִמֶּנּוּ מִן הַנֵּר וְעוֹד מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא עָף. וְלֹא בְּנֵפְט לָבָן וַאֲפִלּוּ בְּחל מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא עָף וְיָבוֹא לִידֵי סַכָּנָה:

10 We do not light with itran (a type of tar) because its smell is bad – lest he leave it and go out; and it is an obligation upon him to sit by the light of the [Shabbat] lamp. And [he may not light] with balm because its smell is good – lest he take some from the lamp – and also because it flutters; and not with white naphtha – and [that is forbidden] even during the week, because it flutters and he will come to [be in] danger.

יא מֻתָּר לְהַדְלִיק לְכַתְּחִלָּה בִּשְׁאָר שְׁמָנִים כְּגוֹן שֶׁמֶן צְנוֹן וְשֻׁמְשְׁמִין וְלֶפֶת וְכָל כַּיּוֹצֵא בָּהֶן. אֵין אָסוּר אֶלָּא אֵלּוּ שֶׁמָּנוּ חֲכָמִים בִּלְבַד:

11 It is permissible from the outset to light with other oils, such as radish oil, sesame [oil], turnip oil and all that are similar to them. There is no prohibition except only [with] those that the Sages enumerated.

יב לֹא יִתֵּן אָדָם כְּלִי מְנֻקָּב מָלֵא שֶׁמֶן עַל פִּי הַנֵּר בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁיְּהֵא מְנַטֵּף. וְלֹא יְמַלֵּא קְעָרָה שֶׁמֶן וְיִתְּנֶנָּה בְּצַד הַנֵּר וְיִתֵּן רֹאשׁ הַפְּתִילָה לְתוֹכָהּ בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁתְּהֵא שׁוֹאֶבֶת. גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יִקַּח מִן הַשֶּׁמֶן שֶׁבַּכְּלִי שֶׁהֲרֵי לֹא נִמְאַס בַּנֵּר. וְאָסוּר לֵהָנוֹת בְּשַׁבָּת מִן הַשֶּׁמֶן שֶׁהֻדְלַק בּוֹ וַאֲפִלּוּ כָּבְתָה הַנֵּר וַאֲפִלּוּ נָטַף מִן הַנֵּר מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מֻקְצֶה מֵחֲמַת אִסּוּר. וְאִם חִבֵּר הַכְּלִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ הַשֶּׁמֶן אֶל הַנֵּר בְּסִיד וּבְחַרְסִית וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּהֶן מֻתָּר:

12 One may not put a perforated vessel full of oil above the opening of a lamp so that [the oil] drip. Nor may he fill a dish with oil and put it next to the lamp and place the head of the wick in it so that it draw [from the oil. It is] a decree lest he take form the oil in the vessel, since it is surely not made disgusting by the lamp (as it would if the oil was sitting below the flame in a lamp). And it is forbidden to benefit from the oil that was lit on Shabbat and even if the lamp was extinguished, and even if [the oil] dripped out; since it is designated ( muktseh) on account of the prohibition. But if he connects the vessel that has the oil in it to the lamp, with lime, clay or that which is similar to them, it is permissible.

יג אֵין נוֹתְנִין כְּלִי תַּחַת הַנֵּר לְקַבֵּל בּוֹ שֶׁמֶן בְּשַׁבָּת שֶׁהֲרֵי מְבַטֵּל הַכְּלִי מֵהֵיכָנוֹ. וְאִם נְתָנוֹ מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם מֻתָּר. וְנוֹתְנִין כְּלִי תַּחַת הַנֵּר בְּשַׁבָּת לְקַבֵּל בּוֹ נִיצוֹצוֹת מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין בָּהֶן מַמָּשׁ וַהֲרֵי לֹא בִּטְלוֹ מִלְּטַלְטְלוֹ. וְאָסוּר לִתֵּן לְתוֹכוֹ מַיִם וַאֲפִלּוּ מֵעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מְקָרֵב כִּבּוּי הַנִּיצוֹצוֹת:

13 We do not put a vessel under a lamp to catch the oil in it on Shabbat – as it surely negates a vessel from its preparedness. But if he had put it [there] while it is still day, it is permissible. And we put a vessel under a lamp on Shabbat to catch the sparks, since there is no substance to them, and he has [thus] not negated it from being carried. But it is forbidden to put water in it – even from the eve of Shabbat – since he quickens the extinguishing of the sparks.

יד אֵין פּוֹלִין לְאוֹר הַנֵּר וְלֹא קוֹרִין לְאוֹר הַנֵּר וַאֲפִלּוּ גָּבוֹהַּ שְׁתֵּי קוֹמוֹת וַאֲפִלּוּ עֲשָׂרָה בָּתִּים זֶה עַל גַּב זֶה וְהַנֵּר בָּעֶלְיוֹנָה לֹא יִקְרָא וְלֹא יַפְלֶה לְאוֹרָהּ בַּתַּחְתּוֹנָה שֶׁמָּא יִשְׁכַּח וְיַטֶּה. וְאִם הָיוּ שְׁנַיִם קוֹרִין בְּעִנְיָן אֶחָד מֻתָּרִין לִקְרוֹת לִפְנֵי הַנֵּר שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד מֵהֶן מַזְכִּיר חֲבֵרוֹ אִם שָׁכַח. אֲבָל לֹא בִּשְׁנֵי עִנְיָנִים שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד מֵהֶן טָרוּד בְּעִנְיָנוֹ:

14 We do not examine [clothing] by the light of the lamp, nor do we read by the light of the lamp, and even if it is two stories high. And if there are ten houses one on top of the other and the lamp is on the top one, he many not read or examine by its light [even] in the lower one, lest he forget and incline [it]. But if there were two [people] reading one topic, they are allowed to read in front of the lamp – since each one will remind his fellow if he forgets. But [this is not the case] with two topics, as each one is preoccupied with his topic.

טו הַתִּינוֹקוֹת קוֹרִין לִפְנֵי רַבָּן לְאוֹר הַנֵּר מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהָרַב מְשַׁמְּרָן. אֲבָל הוּא לֹא יִקְרָא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין אֵימָתָן עָלָיו. וְיֵשׁ לוֹ לִרְאוֹת בַּסֵּפֶר לְאוֹר הַנֵּר עַד שֶׁיִּרְאֶה רֹאשׁ הַפָּרָשָׁה שֶׁהוּא צָרִיךְ לְהַקְרוֹתָן. וְאַחַר כָּךְ נוֹתֵן הַסֵּפֶר בְּיָדָן וְהֵם קוֹרְאִין לְפָנָיו:

15 Infants may read in front of their teacher by the light of the lamp, since the teacher watches them. But he should not read – as he is not afraid of them. However, he should see the book by the light of the lamp until he sees the beginning of the section that he needs to have them read. And afterwards, he gives them the book in their hands and they read in front of him.

טז כֵּלִים הַדּוֹמִים זֶה לָזֶה וְאֵינָן נִכָּרִין אֶלָּא בְּעִיּוּן הַרְבֵּה אָסוּר לְהַקְרִיבָן לְאוֹר הַנֵּר וּלְהַבְחִין בֵּינֵיהֶן שֶׁמָּא יִשְׁכַּח וְיַטֶּה. לְפִיכָךְ שַׁמָּשׁ שֶׁאֵינוֹ קָבוּעַ אָסוּר לוֹ לִבְדֹּק כּוֹסוֹת וּקְעָרוֹת לְאוֹר הַנֵּר מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַכִּירָן. בֵּין בְּנֵר שֶׁל שֶׁמֶן זַיִת בֵּין בְּנֵר שֶׁל נֵפְט שֶׁאוֹרוֹ רַב. אֲבָל שַׁמָּשׁ קָבוּעַ מֻתָּר לוֹ לִבְדֹּק לְאוֹר הַנֵּר כּוֹסוֹת וּקְעָרוֹת מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינוֹ צָרִיךְ עִיּוּן הַרְבֵּה. וְאִם הָיָה נֵר שֶׁל שֶׁמֶן זַיִת אֵין מוֹרִין לוֹ לִבְדֹּק וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהוּא מֻתָּר, גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יִסְתַּפֵּק מִמֶּנּוּ:

16 It is forbidden to bring close vessels that are similar to one another and only recognizable with great deliberation to the light of the lamp and distinguish one from the other, lest he forget and incline [it]. Hence it is forbidden for a butler who is not regular to check cups and dishes by the light of the lamp, since he does not recognize them – whether with a lamp of olive oil, or whether with a lamp of naphtha that has much light. But a regular butler is permitted to check cups and dishes by the light of the lamp, since he does not need much deliberation. But if it is olive oil, we do not instruct him to check. Even though it is permitted, it is a decree lest he stock up from it.

יז נֵר שֶׁאֲחוֹרֵי הַדֶּלֶת אָסוּר לִפְתֹּחַ הַדֶּלֶת וְלִנְעל כְּדַרְכּוֹ מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא מְכַבֵּהוּ אֶלָּא יִזָּהֵר בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁפּוֹתֵחַ וּבְשָׁעָה שֶׁנּוֹעֵל. וְאָסוּר לִפְתֹּחַ אֶת הַדֶּלֶת כְּנֶגֶד הַמְּדוּרָה בְּשַׁבָּת כְּדֵי שֶׁתְּהֵא הָרוּחַ מְנַשֶּׁבֶת בָּהּ וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵין שָׁם אֶלָּא רוּחַ מְצוּיָה. וּמַנִּיחִין הַנֵּר שֶׁל שַׁבָּת עַל גַּבֵּי אִילָן הַמְחֻבָּר לַקַּרְקַע וְאֵינוֹ חוֹשֵׁשׁ:

17 It is forbidden to open and close a door [with] a lamp behind it in its [accustomed] way – since he will extinguish it. Rather, he must be careful at the time he opens [it] and at the time that he closes [it]. And it is forbidden to open the door across from a bonfire on Shabbat such that the wind blows upon it – and even if there is only a common wind (not a strong one) there. And we may place a Shabbat lamp on top of a tree attached to the ground and it is not a concern.

יח כָּל מְדִינוֹת וַעֲיָרוֹת שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל תּוֹקְעִין בָּהֶן שֵׁשׁ תְּקִיעוֹת בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת. וּבְמָקוֹם גָּבוֹהַּ הָיוּ תּוֹקְעִין כְּדֵי לְהַשְׁמִיעַ כָּל אַנְשֵׁי הַמְּדִינָה וְכָל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּגְרָשׁ שֶׁלָּהּ:

18 We blow six blasts of the horn in all the Jewish provinces and cities on the eve of Shabbat. And they would blow from a high place, so as to have hear all of the people of the city and all of the people of its open area.

יט תְּקִיעָה רִאשׁוֹנָה נִמְנְעוּ הָעוֹמְדִים בַּשָּׂדוֹת מִלַּחֲרשׁ וּמִלַּעֲדֹר וּמִלַּעֲשׂוֹת מְלָאכָה שֶׁבַּשָּׂדֶה. וְאֵין הַקְּרוֹבִין רַשָּׁאִין לִכָּנֵס לָעִיר עַד שֶׁיָּבוֹאוּ רְחוֹקִים וְיִכָּנְסוּ כֻּלָּם בְּבַת אַחַת. וַעֲדַיִן הַחֲנֻיּוֹת פְּתוּחוֹת וְהַתְּרִיסִין מֻנָּחִין. הִתְחִיל לִתְקֹעַ שְׁנִיָּה נִסְתַּלְּקוּ הַתְּרִיסִין וְנִנְעֲלוּ הַחֲנֻיּוֹת. וַעֲדַיִן הַחַמִּין וְהַקְּדֵרוֹת מֻנָּחִין עַל גַּבֵּי כִּירָה. הִתְחִיל לִתְקֹעַ תְּקִיעָה שְׁלִישִׁית סִלֵּק הַמְסַלֵּק וְהִטְמִין הַמַּטְמִין וְהִדְלִיקוּ אֶת הַנֵּרוֹת וְשׁוֹהֶה כְּדֵי לִצְלוֹת דָּג קָטָן אוֹ כְּדֵי לְהַדְבִּיק פַּת בַּתַּנּוּר. וְתוֹקֵעַ וּמֵרִיעַ וְתוֹקֵעַ וְשׁוֹבֵת:

19 [With] the first blast, those standing in the fields refrain from plowing and hoeing and from doing work in the field. And those closer are not allowed to enter the city until the ones further come, and they all enter at one time. But the stores are still open and the stands still standing. [When] he begins to blow a second time, the stands are removed and the stores are closed. But the water urns and the stewpots are still resting on the stove. [When] he begins to blow a third time, the one who removes [his food], removes [it]; and the one who covers, [it] covers [it]; and they light the lamps. And [the blower of the horn] pauses enough to roast a fish or to attach bread to the oven. And [then] he blows a tekiah, teruah and a tekiah and stops.

כ תְּקִיעָה רִאשׁוֹנָה תּוֹקֵעַ אוֹתָהּ בְּמִנְחָה. וְהַשְּׁלִישִׁית קָרוֹב לִשְׁקִיעַת הַחַמָּה. וְכֵן תּוֹקְעִין בְּמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת אַחַר צֵאת הַכּוֹכָבִים לְהַתִּיר הָעָם לְמַעֲשֵׂיהֶן:

20 He blows the first blast in the afternoon (at mincha), and the third close to the setting of the sun. And likewise, we blow at the conclusion of Shabbat after the coming out of the stars, to permit the people [to do] their work.

כא יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים שֶׁחָל לִהְיוֹת בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת לֹא הָיוּ תּוֹקְעִין. חָל לִהְיוֹת בְּמוֹצָאֵי שַׁבָּת לֹא תּוֹקְעִין וְלֹא מַבְדִּילִין. יוֹם טוֹב שֶׁחָל לִהְיוֹת בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת תּוֹקְעִין וְלֹא מַבְדִּילִין. חָל לִהְיוֹת לְאַחַר הַשַּׁבָּת מַבְדִּילִין וְלֹא תּוֹקְעִין:

21 They would not blow [on] Yom Kippur that fell out to be on the eve of Shabbat. [If it] fell out to be at the conclusion of Shabbat, we do not blow and we do not make havdalah. We blow but we do not make havdalah [when] a holiday comes out to be on the eve of Shabbat. [If it] fell out to be after Shabbat, we make havdalah, but we do not blow.
