Chapter 4

א אַרְבָּעָה גּוּפִים הַלָּלוּ שֶׁהֵם אֵשׁ וְרוּחַ וּמַיִם וְאֶרֶץ הֵם יְסוֹדוֹת כָּל הַנִּבְרָאִים לְמַטָּה מִן הָרָקִיעַ. וְכָל שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מֵאָדָם וּמִבְּהֵמָה וְעוֹף וְרֶמֶשׂ וְדָג וְצֶמַח וּמַתֶּכֶת וַאֲבָנִים טוֹבוֹת וּמַרְגָּלִיּוֹת וּשְׁאָר אַבְנֵי בִּנְיָן וְהָרִים וְגוּשֵׁי עָפָר הַכּל גָּלְמָן מְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת הַלָּלוּ. נִמְצְאוּ כָּל הַגּוּפִים שֶׁלְּמַטָּה מִן הָרָקִיעַ חוּץ מֵאַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת הָאֵלּוּ מְחֻבָּרִים מִגֹּלֶם וְצוּרָה. וְגֹלֶם שֶׁלָּהֶם מְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת הָאֵלּוּ. אֲבָל כָּל אֶחָד מֵאַרְבָּעָה הַיְסוֹדוֹת אֵינוֹ מְחֻבָּר אֶלָּא מִגֹּלֶם וְצוּרָה בִּלְבַד:

1 These four elements, namely: fire, air, water and earth, are the elements of all the creatures beneath the expanse; all that be whether of man, beast, fowl, creeping thing, fish, vegetation, minerals, precious stones, pearls, structural stones, mountains and glaciers, the body of each and every one is the joint issue of these four elements. Consequently all bodies beneath the expanse, save only these four elements, are joint issue of matter and form; and the body of each is the joint issue of these four elements; but each of these four elements is not the composite of aught else save of body and form only.

ב דֶּרֶךְ הָאֵשׁ וְהָרוּחַ לִהְיוֹת מַהֲלָכָם מִמַּטָּה מִטַּבּוּר הָאָרֶץ לְמַעְלָה כְּלַפֵּי הָרָקִיעַ. וְדֶרֶךְ הַמַּיִם וְהָאָרֶץ לִהְיוֹת מַהֲלָכָם מִתַּחַת הָרָקִיעַ לְמַטָּה עַד לָאֶמְצַע. שֶׁאֶמְצַע הָרָקִיעַ הוּא הַמַּטָּה שֶׁאֵין לְמַטָּה מִמֶּנּוּ. וְאֵין הִלּוּכָם לֹא בְּדַעְתָּם וְלֹא בְּחֶפְצָם אֶלָּא מִנְהָג שֶׁנִּקְבַּע בָּהֶן וְטֶבַע שֶׁנִּטְבַּע בָּהֶן. טֶבַע הָאֵשׁ חַם וְיָבֵשׁ וְהוּא קַל מִכֻּלָּם. וְהָרוּחַ חַם וְלַח. וְהַמַּיִם קָרִים וְלַחִים. וְהָאָרֶץ יְבֵשָׁה וְקָרָה. וְהִיא כְּבֵדָה מִכֻּלָּם וְהַמַּיִם קַלִּים מִמֶּנָּה לְפִיכָךְ נִמְצָאִים לְמַעְלָה עַל הָאָרֶץ. וְהָרוּחַ קַל מִן הַמַּיִם לְפִיכָךְ הוּא מְרַחֵף עַל פְּנֵי הַמַּיִם. וְהָאֵשׁ קַל מִן הָרוּחַ. וּמִפְּנֵי שֶׁהֵם יְסוֹדוֹת לְכָל גּוּפִים שֶׁתַּחַת הָרָקִיעַ יִמָּצֵא כָּל גּוּף וְגוּף מֵאָדָם וּבְהֵמָה וְחַיָּה וְעוֹף וְדַג וְצֶמַח וּמַתֶּכֶת וְאֶבֶן גָּלְמוֹ מְחֻבָּר מֵאֵשׁ וְרוּחַ וּמַיִם וְעָפָר. וְאַרְבַּעְתָּן יִתְעָרְבוּ בְּיַחַד וְיִשְׁתַּנּוּ כָּל אֶחָד מֵהֶם בְּעֵת הָעֵרוּב עַד שֶׁיִּמָּצֵא הַמְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבַּעְתָּן אֵינוֹ דּוֹמֶה לְאֶחָד מֵהֶן כְּשֶׁהוּא לְבַדּוֹ. וְאֵין בַּמְעֹרָב מֵהֶן אֲפִלּוּ חֵלֶק אֶחָד שֶׁהוּא אֵשׁ בִּפְנֵי עַצְמוֹ אוֹ מַיִם בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָן אוֹ אֶרֶץ בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָהּ אוֹ רוּחַ בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָהּ אֶלָּא הַכּל נִשְׁתַּנּוּ וְנַעֲשׂוּ גּוּף אֶחָד. וְכָל גּוּף וְגוּף הַמְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבַּעְתָּן יִמָּצֵא בּוֹ קֹר וְחֹם לַח וְיָבֵשׁ כְּאֶחָד. אֲבָל יֵשׁ מֵהֶם גּוּפִים שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בָּהֶם חָזְקָה מִיסוֹד הָאֵשׁ כְּמוֹ בַּעֲלֵי נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה. לְפִיכָךְ יֵרָאֶה בָּהֶם הַחֹם יָתֵר. וְיֵשׁ מֵהֶן גּוּפִין שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בָּהֶן חָזְקָה מִיסוֹד הָאָרֶץ כְּמוֹ הָאֲבָנִים. לְפִיכָךְ יֵרָאֶה בָּהֶם הַיֹּבֶשׁ הַרְבֵּה. וְיֵשׁ מֵהֶן גּוּפִין שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בָּהֶן חָזְקָה מִיסוֹד הַמַּיִם. לְפִיכָךְ יֵרָאֶה בָּהֶם הַלַּח יָתֵר. וְעַל הַדֶּרֶךְ הַזֶּה יִמָּצֵא גּוּף חַם יֶתֶר מִגּוּף אַחֵר חַם. וְגוּף יָבֵשׁ יֶתֶר מִגּוּף אַחֵר יָבֵשׁ. וְכֵן יִמָּצְאוּ גּוּפִים שֶׁיֵּרָאֶה בָּהֶן הַקֹּר בִּלְבַד. וְגוּפִים יֵרָאֶה בָּהֶן הַלַּח בִּלְבַד. וְגוּפִים יֵרָאֶה בָּהֶן הַקֹּר וְהַיֹּבֶשׁ כְּאֶחָד בְּשָׁוֶה. אוֹ הַקֹּר וְהַלַּח כְּאֶחָד בְּשָׁוֶה. אוֹ הַחֹם וְהַיֹּבֶשׁ כְּאֶחָד בְּשָׁוֶה. אוֹ הַחֹם וְהַלַּח כְּאֶחָד בְּשָׁוֶה. לְפִי רֹב הַיְסוֹד שֶׁהָיָה בְּעִקַּר הַתַּעֲרֹבֶת יֵרָאֶה מַעֲשֵׂה אוֹתוֹ הַיְסוֹד וְטִבְעוֹ בַּגּוּף הַמְעֹרָב:

2 It is the nature of fire and air to go upwards, from the center of the earth upwards towards the expanse; and it is the nature of water and earth to direct their movements beneath the expanse toward its center, as the center of the expanse is the lowermost point, than which there is nothing lower. Their course is not due to their intelligence and not to their desire, but to a rule fixed in them, and to nature which was engendered in them. By nature fire is warm and dry and, therefore, lighter than all of them; and the air is warm and moist; and water is cool and moist; and the earth is dry and cool, and it is heavier than all of them; water is lighter than it, therefore is its place above the earth; the air is lighter than water; therefore is its place above the water; and fire is lighter than air. And because they are elements for all bodies beneath the expanse, it is found that each and every body, whether of man, beasts, animal, fowl and fish, or whether of plant, mineral and stone, its unformed matter is a fusion of fire, air, water and earth. The four elements, too, fuse together so that each one of them loses identity when such fusion takes place, so that the fused element of the four of them becomes unlike one of them when it is by itself. And, in such fused body there is not even one particle which is actual fire, or actual water, or actual earth, or actual air, for all were transformed and made into one body. And in each and every such fused body of the four there is coolness, heat, moisture and drought combined. Nevertheless, there are among them certain bodies in which the element of fire is strongest, as in living creatures, therefore the element of heat is more apparent in them; and there are among them bodies wherein the element of earth is strongest, as in stones, therefore the element of drought is most prominent in them; and there are among them bodies wherein the element of water is strongest, therefore the element of moisture is more apparent. In this manner it happens that one warm body is warmer than another warm body, and one dry body more dry than another dry body. So are found bodies wherein the cold alone appears, and bodies wherein the moisture alone appears, and bodies wherein the cold and the drought appear evenly balanced, or the cold and the moisture evenly balanced, or the heat and the drought evenly balanced, or the heat and the moisture evenly balanced, according to the size of the quantity which was the fundamental element for the fusion will the action of that element and its nature appear in the fused body.

ג וְכָל הַמְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת אֵלּוּ הוּא נִפְרָד בַּסּוֹף. יֵשׁ שֶׁהוּא נִפְרָד לְאַחַר יָמִים אֲחָדִים. וְיֵשׁ שֶׁהוּא נִפְרָד לְאַחַר שָׁנִים רַבּוֹת. וְכָל שֶׁנִּתְחַבֵּר מֵהֶם אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלֹּא יִפָּרֵד לָהֶן. אֲפִלּוּ הַזָּהָב וְהָאֹדֶם אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלֹּא יִפָּסֵד וְיַחֲזֹר לִיסוֹדוֹתָיו. וְיָשׁוּב מִקְצָתוֹ לָאֵשׁ. וּמִקְצָתוֹ לַמַּיִם. וּמִקְצָתוֹ לָרוּחַ. וּמִקְצָתוֹ לָאָרֶץ:

3 All things fused of the four elements terminate in dissolution. In some instances, the dissolution will be in but few days; in others, such dissolution will come to pass after many years; but all that which was fused by them can not avoid dissolution back into them. Even gold and platinum cannot avoid termination and a return to the elements. The process of such return is, part to fire, part to water, part to air and part to dust.

ד הוֹאִיל וְכָל הַנִּפְסָד יִפָּרֵד לִיסוֹדוֹת אֵלּוּ לָמָּה נֶאֱמַר לָאָדָם (בראשית ג יט) "וְאֶל עָפָר תָּשׁוּב". לְפִי שֶׁרֹב בִּנְיָנוֹ מִן הֶעָפָר. וְלֹא כָּל הַנִּפְסָד כְּשֶׁיִּפָּסֵד מִיָּד יַחֲזֹר לְאַרְבָּעָה הַיְסוֹדוֹת. אֶלָּא יִפָּסֵד וְיַחֲזֹר לְדָבָר אַחֵר וְדָבָר אַחֵר לְדָבָר אַחֵר וְסוֹף הַדְּבָרִים יַחֲזֹר לַיְסוֹדוֹת וְנִמְצְאוּ כָּל הַדְּבָרִים חוֹזְרִין חֲלִילָה:

4 Since all that must terminate dissolve into these elements, wherefore was it said to Adam: "And into dust shalt thou return" (Gen. 3.19)? Because the greatest part of his structure is dust. And, not all that undergo dissolution, when they dissolve return at once to the four elements; for they dissolve gradually, one thing will be turned into another, that other into still another one, and in the end those things return to the elements, and thus it is discovered that all things turn in a circle.

ה אַרְבָּעָה יְסוֹדוֹת הָאֵלּוּ מִשְׁתַּנִּים זֶה לָזֶה תָּמִיד בְּכָל יוֹם וּבְכָל שָׁעָה מִקְצָתָן לֹא כָּל גּוּפָן. כֵּיצַד. מִקְצָת הָאָרֶץ הַקְּרוֹבָה מִן הַמַּיִם מִשְׁתַּנֵּית וּמִתְפּוֹרֶרֶת וְנַעֲשֵׂית מַיִם. וְכֵן מִקְצָת הַמַּיִם הַסְּמוּכִים לָרוּחַ מִשְׁתַּנִּין וּמִתְמַסְמְסִין וְהֹוִין רוּחַ. וְכֵן הָרוּחַ מִקְצָתוֹ הַסָּמוּךְ לָאֵשׁ מִשְׁתַּנֶּה וּמִתְחוֹלֵל וְנַעֲשֶׂה אֵשׁ. וְכֵן הָאֵשׁ מִקְצָתָהּ הַסָּמוּךְ לָרוּחַ מִתְחוֹלֵל מִשְׁתַּנֶּה וּמִתְכַּנֵּס וְנַעֲשֶׂה רוּחַ. וְכֵן הָרוּחַ מִקְצָתוֹ הַסָּמוּךְ לַמַּיִם מִשְׁתַּנֶּה וּמִתְכַּנֵּס וְנַעֲשֶׂה מַיִם. וְכֵן הַמַּיִם מִקְצָתוֹ הַסָּמוּךְ לָאָרֶץ מִשְׁתַּנֶּה וּמִתְכַּנֵּס וְנַעֲשֶׂה אֶרֶץ. וְשִׁנּוּי זֶה מְעַט מְעַט וּלְפִי אֹרֶךְ הַיָּמִים. וְאֵין כָּל הַיְסוֹד מִשְׁתַּנֶּה עַד שֶׁיֵּעָשֶׂה כָּל הַמַּיִם רוּחַ אוֹ כָּל הָרוּחַ אֵשׁ. שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיִּבָּטֵל אֶחָד מִן הַיְסוֹדוֹת הָאַרְבָּעָה. אֶלָּא מִקְצָת יִשְׁתַּנֶּה מֵאֵשׁ לְרוּחַ וּמִקְצָת יִשְׁתַּנֶּה מֵרוּחַ לְאֵשׁ. וְכֵן בֵּין כָּל אֶחָד וַחֲבֵרוֹ יִמָּצֵא הַשִּׁנּוּי בֵּין אַרְבַּעְתָּן וְחוֹזְרוֹת חֲלִילָה לְעוֹלָם:

5 The four elements perpetually change one into another, partially, and not bodily. How so? Part of the earth nearest the water breaks and changes and becomes water; so does part of the water nearest the air evaporate and change and become air; so does part of the air nearest fire shift and change and become fire; so does part of fire nearest air shift and change, solidify and become air; so does part of the air nearest the water change, solidify and become water; so does part of the water nearest earth change, clots and becomes earth. But the change is little by little, in proportion to the lapse of time. Neither does an element change completely so that all the water will become air, or all the air fire, because it is impossible that one of these four elements should be entirely nullified; but part of the fire does become air, part of the air does become fire, and so between each and the other, and thus the change will be found among the four, and so it turns in a circle forever.

ו וְשִׁנּוּי זֶה יִהְיֶה בִּסְבִיבַת הַגַּלְגַּל וּמִסְּבִיבָתוֹ יִתְחַבְּרוּ אַרְבַּעְתָּן וְיִהְיֶה מֵהֶן שְׁאָר גָּלְמֵי בְּנֵי אָדָם וְנֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה צֶמַח וְאֶבֶן וּמַתֶּכֶת. וְהָאֵל נוֹתֵן לְכָל גֹּלֶם וְגֹלֶם צוּרָה רְאוּיָה לוֹ עַל יְדֵי מַלְאָךְ הָעֲשִׂירִי שֶׁהִיא הַצּוּרָה הַנִּקְרֵאת אִישִׁים:

6 This change is made possible by the revolution of the sphere, and by the force of its revolution the four elements derive power of fusion, and out of them are other bodies, sons of man, living creature, plant, stone and mineral. To each and every body God gives a due form through the Angel of the tenth sphere, the Intelligence called Men.

ז לְעוֹלָם אֵין אַתָּה רוֹאֶה גֹּלֶם בְּלֹא צוּרָה אוֹ צוּרָה בְּלֹא גֹּלֶם. אֶלָּא לֵב הָאָדָם הוּא שֶׁמְּחַלֵּק גּוּף הַנִּמְצָא בְּדַעְתּוֹ וְיוֹדֵעַ שֶׁהוּא מְחֻבָּר מִגֹּלֶם וְצוּרָה. וְיוֹדֵעַ שֶׁיֵּשׁ שָׁם גּוּפִים שֶׁגָּלְמָם מְחֻבָּר מֵאַרְבַּעַת הַיְסוֹדוֹת. וְגוּפִים שֶׁגָּלְמָם פָּשׁוּט וְאֵינוֹ מְחֻבָּר מִגֹּלֶם אַחֵר. וְהַצּוּרוֹת שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם גֹּלֶם אֵינָן נִרְאִין לָעַיִן אֶלָּא בְּעֵין הַלֵּב הֵן יְדוּעִין. כְּמוֹ שֶׁיָּדַעְנוּ אֲדוֹן הַכּל בְּלֹא רְאִיַּת עַיִן:

7 You never see a body without a form, or a form without a body; it is only the heart of man which divides a given body conceived in his mind and knows that it is fused of matter and form; he also knows that there are bodies whose unformed matter is fused of the four elements and bodies whose unformed matter is plain, unfused and of but one element. The forms which are not of matter are not visible to the eye, but are known to the heart's eye as we know the Lord of all without seeing Him with the eye.

ח נֶפֶשׁ כָּל בָּשָׂר הִיא צוּרָתוֹ שֶׁנָּתַן לוֹ הָאֵל וְהַדַּעַת הַיְתֵרָה הַמְּצוּיָה בְּנַפְשׁוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם הִיא צוּרַת הָאָדָם הַשָּׁלֵם בְּדַעְתּוֹ. וְעַל צוּרָה זוֹ נֶאֱמַר בַּתּוֹרָה נַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם בְּצַלְמֵנוּ כִּדְמוּתֵנוּ כְּלוֹמַר שֶׁתִּהְיֶה לוֹ צוּרָה הַיּוֹדַעַת וּמַשֶּׂגֶת הַדֵּעוֹת שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם גֹּלֶם כְּמוֹ הַמַּלְאָכִים שֶׁהֵם צוּרָה בְּלֹא גֹּלֶם עַד שֶׁיִּדְמֶה לָהֶן. וְאֵינוֹ אוֹמֵר עַל צוּרָה זוֹ הַנִּכֶּרֶת לָעֵינַיִם שֶׁהִיא הַפֶּה וְהַחֹטֶם וְהַלְּסָתוֹת וּשְׁאָר רשֶׁם הַגּוּף שֶׁזּוֹ תֹּאַר שְׁמָהּ. וְאֵינָהּ הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַמְּצוּיָה לְכָל נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה שֶׁבָּהּ אוֹכֵל וְשׁוֹתֶה וּמוֹלִיד וּמַרְגִּישׁ וּמְהַרְהֵר. אֶלָּא הַדֵּעָה שֶׁהִיא צוּרַת הַנֶּפֶשׁ וּבְצוּרַת הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַכָּתוּב מְדַבֵּר בְּצַלְמֵנוּ כִּדְמוּתֵנוּ. וּפְעָמִים רַבּוֹת תִּקָּרֵא זֹאת הַצּוּרָה נֶפֶשׁ וְרוּחַ. וּלְפִיכָךְ צָרִיךְ לְהִזָּהֵר בִּשְׁמוֹתָן שֶׁלֹּא יִטְעֶה אָדָם בָּהֶן. וְכָל שֵׁם וְשֵׁם יִלָּמֵד מֵעִנְיָנוֹ:

8 The soul of all flesh is the form which God gave unto him, and the high intelligence which is found in the soul of man is the form of the man who is perfectly intelligent. Concerning this form it is said in the Torah: "Let us make man in our form after our image" (Gen. 1.26), as if saying, that he should possess a form which knows and attains the Intelligences which have no body, as angels, which are forms without a body, thereby being like unto them. But this is not spoken of a given form which is recognized by the eyes, as the mouth, the nose, the cheek-bones, or any other description of the body, for such is the name of its shape; neither does it apply to the life of living creatures by which it can eat, drink, reproduce, feel and ponder; but it is concerning the Intelligence which is the form of the soul, for it is about the form of the soul that the Verse speaks—"in our form after our image". Often times this form is called soul and breath of life, and, therefore, it is necessary to take care in naming them, so that man will not err in such, but each and every name one will learn from the subject thereof.

ט אֵין צוּרַת הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַזֹּאת מְחֻבֶּרֶת מִן הַיְסוֹדוֹת כְּדֵי שֶׁתִּפָּרֵד לָהֶם, וְאֵינָהּ מִכֹּחַ הַנְּשָׁמָה עַד שֶׁתְּהֵא צְרִיכָה לַנְּשָׁמָה כְּמוֹ שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה צְרִיכָה לַגּוּף. אֶלָּא מֵאֵת ה' מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם הִיא. לְפִיכָךְ כְּשֶׁיִּפָּרֵד הַגֹּלֶם שֶׁהוּא מְחֻבָּר מִן הַיְסוֹדוֹת וְתֹאבַד הַנְּשָׁמָה מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינָהּ מְצוּיָה אֶלָּא עִם הַגּוּף וּצְרִיכָה לַגּוּף בְּכָל מַעֲשֶׂיהָ לֹא תִּכָּרֵת הַצּוּרָה הַזֹּאת. לְפִי שֶׁאֵינָהּ צְרִיכָה לַנְּשָׁמָה בְּמַעֲשֶׂיהָ. אֶלָּא יוֹדַעַת וּמַשֶּׂגֶת הַדֵּעוֹת הַפְּרוּדוֹת מִן הַגְּלָמִים וְיוֹדַעַת בּוֹרֵא הַכּל וְעוֹמֶדֶת לְעוֹלָם וּלְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים. הוּא שֶׁאָמַר שְׁלֹמֹה בְּחָכְמָתוֹ (קהלת יב ז) "וְיָשֹׁב הֶעָפָר עַל הָאָרֶץ כְּשֶׁהָיָה וְהָרוּחַ תָּשׁוּב אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר נְתָנָהּ":

9 The form of this soul is not composed of the elements to be separated and become part of them, and it is not an offshoot of the power of the soul to be dependent upon a soul as well as the soul is dependent upon a body. But this form is from the Lord, from Heaven. Therefore, when the body which is composed of the four elements dissolves and the spirit of life is lost, because it is non-existing save only when in the body, and is dependent upon a body in all its functions, this form will not be cut off, for it is not dependent upon a soul in its functions, but doth know and attain all Intelligences which are independent of matter, and knows the Creator of all, and lives forever and throughout all worlds to be. This is what Solomon in his wisdom said: "And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit unto God Who gave it." (Ecc. 12.7).

י כָּל הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלּוּ שֶׁדִּבַּרְנוּ בְּעִנְיָן זֶה כְּמַר מִדְּלִי הֵם וּדְבָרִים עֲמֻקִּים הֵם. אֲבָל אֵינָם כְּעִנְיַן עֹמֶק פֶּרֶק רִאשׁוֹן וְשֵׁנִי. וּבֵאוּר כָּל אֵלּוּ הַדְּבָרִים שֶׁבְּפֶרֶק שְׁלִישִׁי וּרְבִיעִי הוּא הַנִּקְרָא מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית. וְכָךְ צִוּוּ הַחֲכָמִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים שֶׁאֵין דּוֹרְשִׁין בַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלּוּ בָּרַבִּים אֶלָּא לְאָדָם אֶחָד מוֹדִיעִין דְּבָרִים אֵלּוּ וּמְלַמְּדִין אוֹתָן:

10 All these matters we spoke of on this subject are but a drop in the bucket, and they are very deep matters; but are not of the same depth as the subject in chapters I and II. The exposition of all these matters in chapters III and IV is called Cosmogony. Thus did the ancient sages charge not to sermonize on these matters before the multitude, but to impart them to one man and instruct him therein.

יא וּמָה בֵּין עִנְיַן מַעֲשֵׂה מֶרְכָּבָה לְעִנְיַן מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית. שֶׁעִנְיַן מַעֲשֵׂה מֶרְכָּבָה אֲפִלּוּ לְאֶחָד אֵין דּוֹרְשִׁים בּוֹ אֶלָּא אִם כֵּן הָיָה חָכָם וּמֵבִין מִדַּעְתּוֹ מוֹסְרִין לוֹ רָאשֵׁי הַפְּרָקִים. וְעִנְיַן מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית מְלַמְּדִין אוֹתוֹ לְיָחִיד אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵינוֹ מֵבִין אוֹתוֹ מִדַּעְתּוֹ וּמוֹדִיעִים אוֹתוֹ כָּל מַה שֶּׁיָּכוֹל לֵידַע מִדְּבָרִים אֵלּוּ. וְלָמָּה אֵין מְלַמְּדִין אוֹתוֹ לָרַבִּים. לְפִי שֶׁאֵין כָּל אָדָם יֵשׁ לוֹ דַּעַת רְחָבָה לְהַשִּׂיג פֵּרוּשׁ וּבֵאוּר כָּל הַדְּבָרִים עַל בֻּרְיָן:

11 And, wherein is the difference between the subject of Works of the Chariot and the subject of Cosmogony? The subject of Works of the Chariot shall not be imparted even to an individual unless he be a scholar endowed with a reasoning power of his own, and then only the epitomes of each chapter may be transmitted to him; whereas the subject of Cosmogony may be imparted to an individual, even though not endowed with a reasoning power of his own, and it is permissible to teach him all that he is capable of knowing concerning these matters. If so, why not give public instructions therein? Because not every man is endowed with broad understanding to construe the explanation and elucidation of all the text correctly.

יב בִּזְמַן שֶׁאָדָם מִתְבּוֹנֵן בַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלּוּ וּמַכִּיר כָּל הַבְּרוּאִים מִמַּלְאָךְ וְגַלְגַּל וְאָדָם כַּיּוֹצֵא בּוֹ וְיִרְאֶה חָכְמָתוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא בְּכָל הַיְצוּרִים וְכָל הַבְּרוּאִים. מוֹסִיף אַהֲבָה לַמָּקוֹם וְתִצְמָא נַפְשׁוֹ וְיִכְמַהּ בְּשָׂרוֹ לֶאֱהֹב הַמָּקוֹם בָּרוּךְ הוּא. וְיִירָא וְיִפְחַד מִשִּׁפְלוּתוֹ וְדַלּוּתוֹ וְקַלּוּתוֹ כְּשֶׁיַּעֲרִיךְ עַצְמוֹ לְאֶחָד מֵהַגּוּפוֹת הַקְּדוֹשִׁים הַגְּדוֹלִים. וְכָל שֶׁכֵּן לְאַחַת מֵהַצּוּרוֹת הַטְּהוֹרוֹת הַנִּפְרָדוֹת מִן הַגְּלָמִים שֶׁלֹּא נִתְחַבְּרוּ בַּגֹּלֶם כְּלָל. וְיִמְצָא עַצְמוֹ שֶׁהוּא כִּכְלִי מָלֵא בּוּשָׁה וּכְלִמָּה רֵיק וְחָסֵר:

12 When man contemplates concerning these things, and perceives all creatures, whether angel, sphere, or man the likeness of himself, and discovers the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed is He! in all beings of form and in all creatures, his love for the Omnipresent increases and his soul and body thirst and yearn to love Him, blessed is He! and, fear and terror, because of his own insignificance, shortcomings and levity seize him when comparing himself to one of the great and holy bodies, verily so to one of the pure forms, separated from bodies of clay, which never joined a body of clay. He then will find himself likened to a vessel full of shame and disgrace, empty and wanting.

יג וְעִנְיְנֵי אַרְבָּעָה פְּרָקִים אֵלּוּ שֶׁבְּחָמֵשׁ מִצְוֹת הָאֵלּוּ הֵם שֶׁחֲכָמִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים קוֹרְאִין אוֹתוֹ פַּרְדֵּס כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמְרוּ אַרְבָּעָה נִכְנְסוּ לַפַּרְדֵּס. וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁגְּדוֹלֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיוּ וַחֲכָמִים גְּדוֹלִים הָיוּ לֹא כֻּלָּם הָיָה בָּהֶן כֹּחַ לֵידַע וּלְהַשִּׂיג כָּל הַדְּבָרִים עַל בֻּרְיָן. וַאֲנִי אוֹמֵר שֶׁאֵין רָאוּי לְטַיֵּל בַּפַּרְדֵּס אֶלָּא מִי שֶׁנִּתְמַלֵּא כְּרֵסוֹ לֶחֶם וּבָשָׂר. וְלֶחֶם וּבָשָׂר הוּא לֵידַע הָאָסוּר וְהַמֻּתָּר וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָּהֶם מִשְּׁאָר הַמִּצְוֹת. וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁדְּבָרִים אֵלּוּ דָּבָר קָטָן קָרְאוּ אוֹתָן חֲכָמִים שֶׁהֲרֵי אָמְרוּ חֲכָמִים דָּבָר גָּדוֹל מַעֲשֵׂה מֶרְכָּבָה וְדָבָר קָטָן הֲוָיוֹת דְּאַבַּיֵּי וְרָבָא. אַף עַל פִּי כֵן רְאוּיִין הֵן לְהַקְדִּימָן. שֶׁהֵן מְיַשְּׁבִין דַּעְתּוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם תְּחִלָּה. וְעוֹד שֶׁהֵם הַטּוֹבָה הַגְּדוֹלָה שֶׁהִשְׁפִּיעַ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיִשּׁוּב הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה כְּדֵי לִנְחל חַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. וְאֶפְשָׁר שֶׁיְּדָעֵם הַכּל קָטָן וְגָדוֹל אִישׁ וְאִשָּׁה בַּעַל לֵב רָחָב וּבַעַל לֵב קָצָר:

13 The subjects in these four chapters of these five commandments, are the same which the early sages speak of as Vineyard, saying: "Four entered the vineyard" (Haggigah 14), who, though great men in Israel and great scholars, not all of them had the intellectual power to know and grasp all these matters clearly; and I say that no one is deserving to promenade in the Vineyard unless he be filled with intellectual bread and meat, that is to say: one must know what is forbidden and what is permitted and similar to these of the rest of the commandments. And, although these matters were pronounced by the sages as of lesser importance, for they said: "A great matter is the Works of the Chariot, and a small matter is the controversies of Abyia and Raba, Nevertheless, they have precedence as a study because they commence to compose man's mind; moreover, they are the store of great good which the Holy One, blessed is He, hath provided for the social existence of this world, so that the life of the world to Come may also be inherited, and be accessible to all, little and great, men and women, to one of broad understanding as well as to one of lesser understanding.
